Lakers Drop GLIAC Matchup To Davenport

CHICAGO – Roosevelt's second-half comeback fell short in a 78-60 setback against Davenport on Thursday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Goodman Center.

It was a cold start to the game on offense as the Lakers shot worse than 30 percent from the field in the first half. Some quality looks did not fall, particularly from behind the arc as the Lakers made just 3 of 13 from 3-point range in the first half. Roosevelt (2-14, 1-8 GLIAC) trailed by 15 at the intermission, setting the stage for a potential comeback.

The Lakers certainly made things interesting in the second half, several times cutting the deficit to 10 and having chances to creep back into the single digits. Mikey West dropped 18 points in the second half and Dante Sawyer added 11 more after halftime as well. Yet the stops were hard to come by down the stretch as the Panthers held off the Lakers.

West led the team with 23 points courtesy of a historic night at the free-throw line. The senior made all 13 of his foul shots, leaving him one behind the all-time record of most free throws made in a game and the best free-throw percentage in a game. Sawyer added 15 points and Davon Smith-Johnson chipped in 10 as the three Lakers in double figures.

Smith-Johnson and Kaleim Taylor tied for the team lead with four assists each, one shy of the season high for the team. Mason Kleinsmith hit a corner 3 and led the team with five rebounds, meanwhile Sawyer had five steals in the loss, the second Roosevelt player this season to have five thefts in a game.

UP NEXT: The Lakers will battle Grand Valley State, which is receiving votes in the national poll, on Saturday at 3 p.m. inside the Goodman Center.
