Lakers Finish Sweep Of Barry On Opening Weekend

CHICAGO – Roosevelt stayed strong for four sets Saturday for a second consecutive win over Barry at the Goodman Center.

It was another tough first set for the Lakers as the Buccaneers rallied for a 25-21 victory in the opener. However, much like Friday, Roosevelt didn't let Barry gain any momentum over the final three sets and defended its home court with 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21 wins. The Lakers (2-1) hit .300 for the match and had four players finish with at least eight kills.

There was no one focal point in the victory as different players rose to the occasion at key moments throughout the match. Kajetan Bieniek led the group with 15 kills but didn't have more than four kills in any set. Mark Zmojdzin smashed down 12 kills, five of which came in the fourth set to help the Lakers race ahead at the end of the match.

Jonathan Stovring was a catalyst in the second set after Barry took the opener, coming up with four of his eight kills in that set to help Roosevelt even the match. In the third set, Adrian Gajewski came on to steady the squad at setter and dished out nine assists on 11 sets to help Roosevelt hit .429 as a team in the set. Gajewski added 12 more assists in the fourth set to finish just behind Martino Betagnoli's 24 helpers in the match.

Simone Augugliaro came off the bench in the first set and never left the court after that to finish with nine kills on a .462 hitting percentage. The freshman also had five kills in the fourth set to help Roosevelt persevere through a set that featured 14 ties and five lead changes. Ashton Stage had five big kills and also was part of three of Roosevelt's five blocks to help anchor the defense.

UP NEXT: The Lakers take their winning streak to the Big Apple for a pair of games next weekend in the New York City metropolitan area. Roosevelt will face Manhattan on Friday in the Bronx before heading over the border to New Jersey to face Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday.
