West, Timely Defense Drive Roosevelt To First GLIAC Win

HAMMOND, Ind. – Roosevelt went on a 15-0 second-half run to earn its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season with a 77-74 triumph over Purdue Northwest on Thursday in Hammond, Ind.

After trailing by as many as nine in the second half, the Lakers climbed back into the game, but still trailed by five with 8:14 left. Over the next six minutes, Roosevelt (2-12, 1-6 GLIAC) shut down Purdue Northwest, and cleaned up the defensive glass, to ride a wave of momentum through a 15-0 run. The Lakers rebounded all seven of the Pride's misses during the stretch and they made four of their five shots in that period as well.

Hamahrie Bowers had eight of his 12 second-half points during that stretch as the Lakers took a 10-point lead with a little more than two minutes to go. Bowers finished with 15 points after making all of his shots in the second half. He made all three field goals, including two 3-pointers, and sank all four of his free throws.

However, Purdue Northwest never went away and cut the deficit down to a single possession with 23 seconds left. Mikey West hit two free throws down the stretch to keep the Lakers in the lead to cap off his career night of 33 points.

For the first 32 minutes, the Lakers rode the coat tails of West's career shooting night to keep pace with the Pride. The senior scored 29 of his points in the early minutes when not much else was working for Roosevelt. West was particularly effective from behind the arc where he knocked down 7 of his 11 attempts, becoming the first Lakers player in four years to hit that many 3-pointers. West is also the seventh player to score at least 30 points for Roosevelt under coach Dee Brown.

Dante Sawyer finished with 16 points that were evenly split between the first and second half. In the opening half, he hit a jump shot to give the Lakers a one-point lead with less than four minutes left then added a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to one right before halftime. In the second half, Sawyer hit a critical 3 during the deciding run.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will try to ride the momentum into the Motor City on Saturday where the Lakers will face Wayne State at 3 p.m.
