Escudero Named GLIAC Special Teams Player Of Week

BAY CITY, Mich. – For the second time in his Roosevelt career, senior kicker Mauricio Escudero was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.

The San Diego native booted three field goals and added a pair of extra points for 11 total points in the Lakers' 23-21 win over Quincy on Saturday. In the first quarter, Escudero put Roosevelt on the board with a 40-yarder then set a new career long on the Lakers' next drive with a 46-yard attempt that easily sailed through the uprights.

In the fourth quarter, Escudero had a short attempt blocked by Quincy, but he bounced back on his next attempt and nailed the game-winning 32-yard field goal with four minutes remaining. The last time Escudero made three field goals in a game is also the last time he was honored by the GLIAC, earning the honor after three field goals last season against Valparaiso.

"Mauricio is one of the hardest workers on our team," Roosevelt head coach Billy McKeon said. "He attacked the offseason with a clear plan and focus on the areas he needed to improve, and when we returned for camp this summer, it was obvious how much effort he had put in. On Saturday, he did an outstanding job in every phase of his kicking, and his performance was a direct reflection of that preparation and dedication."

In addition to his place-kicking duties, Escudero also handled kickoffs for the Lakers on Saturday. He averaged 61 yards per kickoff and limited Quincy to an average starting position of its own 23-yard line on those kickoffs.

The Lakers return to action Saturday afternoon against Southwest Baptist with kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Morris Field.
