DETROIT – Roosevelt's late-inning rally came up just short as Wayne State held on for a 4-3 win over the Lakers on Sunday in the finale of their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series in Detroit.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of a pair of unearned runs on what would have otherwise been the third out. They then added one more in the third inning before the Lakers (7-25, 1-11 GLIAC) started their comeback. Roosevelt's pitching was able to strand runners on second and third in the fourth and seventh innings to give the offense a chance to make up the deficit.
Roosevelt's first hit of the game came in the top of the third inning when
Sebastian Casillas ripped a two-out double into right field to put runners on second and third. The Lakers left those two runners on base then stranded the bases loaded in the fourth inning, proving they were close to that breakthrough.
It finally occurred in the sixth inning when
Kekoa Ogawa led off with a single then scored after an error following
Luke Ulbert's double into the gap in left centerfield.
Kyle Jannenga also doubled two batters later to score Ulbert and cut the deficit in half to 4-2.
James Berry extended his hitting streak to 20 games in the seventh inning then came up with a clutch two-out single in the ninth inning to put the tying run in scoring position.
Jack Kieffer led off the ninth with a walk then advanced to third on Casillas' single. Berry found the grass in left field to plate Kieffer and move Casillas to second before a groundout ended the game.
Jake Glickman scattered seven hits across his five innings on the mound with just two of the four runs charged against him being earned. The Lakers bullpen allowed just three hits over the final three innings while the top-four spots in Roosevelt's order accounted for eight of the team's nine hits.
UP NEXT: The Lakers have the week off before traveling to Grand Valley State for another four-game GLIAC series starting Friday.
