Late GVSU Rally Trips Up Roosevelt

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt's late-inning struggles continued Friday in a 9-3 loss to Grand Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in Allendale, Mich.

Omar Abuelhija started on the mound for Roosevelt (7-26, 1-12 GLIAC), and was able to cruise through his first five innings. He did not allow a hit during that stretch with the only base runner coming via an error. However, that runner would come around to score in the second inning to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

The visiting Lakers, though, wasted no time countering by scratching across three runs on six hits in the fourth inning. Kekoa Ogawa began the frame with a single and James Berry quickly tied the game with a double before being thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. The hit extended Berry's hitting streak to 21 games as the senior maintained his .400 batting average.

Luke Ulbert singled then moved to third on a double from Kyle Jannenga before Jack Hoh hit an RBI single to the infield. Quinn O'Bryan plated Jannenga with a single and Roosevelt left the bases loaded with a hard-hit third out.

Grand Valley State collected its first hit of the game to lead off the sixth inning and tied the game two batters later with a triple. The Lakers plated four runs in the sixth then added two more each in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away.

Roosevelt finished with a 10-8 edge in hits as Ogawa, Hoh and Ulbert all had two hits in the setback.

UP NEXT: The two Lakers will battle Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. in Allendale.
