ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Roosevelt offense struggled to make a dent in a pair of losses Saturday at No. 20 Grand Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in Michigan.
The Lakers (7-28, 1-13 GLIAC) picked up just three hits in both games of the doubleheader, falling 6-1 in the opening game and 10-0 in the second matchup. Senior outfielder
James Berry had a hit in both games to extend his hitting streak to 23 games, the only Lakers player with a hit in both contests.
GRAND VALLEY STATE 6, ROOSEVELT 1
Berry started the offensive attack early with a ground-rule double in the top of the first inning.
Luke Ulbert hit a single that scored Berry then advanced to second on the throw to try and nab Berry at the plate.
Grand Valley State scored four times in the bottom of the second inning with all four runs being unearned against
Keagan Bobbitt. The lefty allowed just four hits and struck out five in five innings with all four runs charged to him being unearned. The host Lakers added two more unearned runs in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.
Kekoa Ogawa hit a two-out double in the third inning and
Harrison Kowalski was hit by a pitch in the fifth to be the only other Roosevelt base runners.
GRAND VALLEY STATE 10, ROOSEVELT 0
Roosevelt had some chances early to put pressure on Grand Valley State despite falling behind 1-0 after the opening inning.
Quinn O'Bryan and
Sebastian Casillas hit back-to-back two-out singles in the third, but were stranded on the base paths. Berry hit a one-out single in the sixth before being caught trying to tag up to end the inning.
The hosts added two runs in the third, four in the fifth then the final three in the seventh for a walk-off win.
