Roosevelt Rally Not Enough At GVSU

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt's rally was not enough to overcome an early deficit in a 9-6 setback against No. 20 Grand Valley State on Sunday in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in Allendale, Mich.

The hosts came out swinging with six hits and four runs while leaving the bases loaded in the first inning. Grand Valley State added two more runs on three hits in the second inning then tacked on a seventh run in the third inning to rush out to a commanding 7-1 lead.

That one run came courtesy of Jack Kieffer's solo home run in the second inning, and the Lakers (7-29, 1-15 GLIAC) did not go quietly after that. James Berry extended his hitting streak to 24 games with a leadoff double in the fourth inning, and Kieffer recorded his second RBI of the game with a single to score him.

After Kevin Schroer cruised through the Grand Valley State lineup in order in the bottom of the fourth, Roosevelt caught a break. Harrison Kowalski led off with a walk, but two quick outs made it seem like the rally would fizzle out. Instead, Kekoa Ogawa reached on an error, allowing Berry to drive in a pair with his second double of the day. Luke Ulbert then drove his team-leading fifth home run of the season into the seats in left centerfield to make it a 7-6 game.

Roosevelt had some chances in the later innings, but a two-out triple and two-out single in the bottom of the sixth allowed Grand Valley State to extend its lead. Berry and Kieffer both had two hits in the game as the Lakers had seven hits in the contest. Sebastian Casillas and Kowalski added singles in addition to Ulbert's home run.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns home to Ozinga Field to open a four-game series with Purdue Northwest on Thursday at 3 p.m.
