Roosevelt Swept In GLIAC Doubleheader At Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Roosevelt fell Saturday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ferris State in a pair of tough defeats.

The Lakers (9-21, 3-9 GLIAC) scored in the first inning of the first game, but the Bulldogs came back to score seven unanswered in a 7-1 win. In the second game, Roosevelt scored late, but it was not enough in a 4-1 setback.

FERRIS STATE 7, ROOSEVELT 1
Roosevelt's offense executed its mission well in the first inning as Caitlin Williams moved around the bases efficiently. She started off by drawing a walk then stole second base to tie the Lakers' program record for steals in a season. Athena Pomele-Pen found the grass in right field to move Williams to third then Brynn Dvoracek hit a sacrifice fly to score Williams.

The lead did not last long as Ferris State scored in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI groundout to limit the damage. Kailey Hancock escaped the second inning by stranding runners on second and third.

Williams stole second base in the third inning for her 17th steal of the season, breaking the school record. However, a pair of strikeouts left her on second base.

In the bottom of the third, Hancock quickly recorded the first two outs before three straight extra-base hits plated four runs for the Bulldogs. Ferris State added two-out runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Roosevelt had one more threat left in it. The Lakers put runners on first and second in the sixth before grounding into a double play to end the frame.

FERRIS STATE 4, ROOSEVELT 1
Riley Czarnecki hit the first batter she faced, but settled down to retire the next three batters in the first inning. Back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt put the freshman in trouble in the second, but the Beaver Dam, Wis. native hunkered down with consecutive strikeouts. The Bulldogs finally broke through for two runs in the third, but Czarnecki again bunkered down to escape the jam.

After Williams walked in the first inning, the Lakers didn't put another runner on base until the sixth inning. Williams was able to advance to third in the first inning then in the second, Kendall Pearson recorded Roosevelt's first hit. However, Pearson was thrown out trying to stretch her double into a triple for the second out of the inning.

Roosevelt's next base runner after Williams didn't actually stay on base for long as Isis Enriquez ripped a home run over the left-field fence. Williams did draw a two-out walk but was left there. Pearson then hit a single into center field in the seventh inning before the Bulldogs closed down the game.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt continues its road trip Sunday with a doubleheader at Davenport starting at 11 a.m.
