Lakers Rebound For Split At Davenport

CALEDONIA, MICH. – Roosevelt responded with five runs in the first inning of the second game to split a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Davenport on Sunday.

The Lakers (10-22, 4-10 GLIAC) rallied to tie the opening game in the top of the fourth inning, but the Panthers were able to score three more in the bottom of the frame for an eventual 9-3 win. Roosevelt didn't let Davenport gather any momentum in the second game, dominating from start to finish in an 8-3 victory to snap a seven-game skid.

DAVENPORT 9, ROOSEVELT 3
It was a tough first inning for the Lakers as the Panthers put up three early runs in the opening frame. The last two came on a throwing error, the first of three in the game for Roosevelt.

Athena Pomele-Pen ignited the comeback in the fourth inning with a double then Brynn Dvoracek worked a walk. Kendall Pearson loaded the bases with a simple single into left field before Isis Enriquez drove in Pomele-Pen and Dvoracek with a single. Bianca Gallegos followed with a single of her own to score Pearson and send Enriquez all the way to third.

The Lakers had four of their six hits in the game in that fourth inning, but the Panthers were able to seize back momentum with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Davenport added three more in the sixth inning before the Lakers went down in order in the seventh.

Pearson finished the first game 2 for 2 with a sacrifice bunt in the second inning.

ROOSEVELT 8, DAVENPORT 3
The Lakers got off to a much different start in the second game, locking in early on the Panthers pitching. Ella Dvoracek singled to center field to lead off the game then moved to second on Pearson's hard grounder to first base. A two-out passed ball allowed the sophomore to advance to third before Brynn Dvoracek walked.

Gallegos plated the first run with her single into right field that moved Brynn Dvoracek over to third base. Libby Kreykes drew a walk to load the bases and Enriquez hit a sharp single to drive in another run. Rebecca Urbaniak kept the party going with a bases-clearing double to make it 5-0 Lakers after the first inning.

Kailey Hancock was perfect in the first inning, allowing for the senior duo of Pomele-Pen and Brynn Dvoracek to do more damage in the second. Pomele-Pen hit a two-out single and Dvoracek followed with a double into the gap to score Pomele-Pen for her team-leading 23rd RBI of the season.

Hancock cruised through the second and third innings before the Panthers hit a two-run homer in the fourth. But the sophomore recorded the next three outs with ease to keep the momentum with the Lakers. Davenport added one more run in the fifth inning, but Hancock allowed just six hits in 5.1 innings in the circle with two strikeouts and no walks. Catie Luzzi came on for the final five outs and allowed just a single hit while striking out two of the seven batters she faced.

Roosevelt tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning courtesy of two errors from the Davenport defense. Gallegos initially reached base due to a fielding error by the third baseman, then came around to score on an errant throw from the catcher. Urbaniak came up and singled through the left side to plate Kreykes from third after the freshman catcher reached on a single, advanced on a passed ball then moved up on the catcher's throwing error.

Urbaniak was a perfect 2 for 2 with four RBIs in the game while Gallegos was 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns home to Rosemont on Wednesday to host a doubleheader against Parkside starting at 3 p.m. at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.
