Urbaniak Delivers Roosevelt To GLIAC Tournament

ROSEMONT – Rebecca Urbaniak capped off a memorable seventh-inning rally with a double to secure Roosevelt's spot in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament after sweeping Davenport on Friday at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.

The Lakers (17-27, 11-15 GLIAC) handled business in the first game with a 6-0 win to put themselves two games above the Panthers for the final spot in the conference tournament. Urbaniak then sealed Roosevelt's destiny with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh as the Lakers scored four times in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 walk-off win.

Roosevelt came up for its final at-bats after allowing three runs to score in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. A win would send the Lakers to the conference tournament in their first year in the league by pulling three games ahead of Davenport with two games left in the regular season.

Bianca Gallegos started the rally with a pinch-hit single and an error by the Panthers third basement allowed Ella Dvoracek to reach and advance to second. Kendall Pearson sent a pitch back up the middle for an RBI single and she moved up to second on a throw to third. Athena Pomele-Pen then quickly tied the game with a single into center field, and she ran to second on the throw home.

Pomele-Pen took third base on a passed ball and then tried to score on a soft grounder from Brynn Dvoracek. The Panthers were able to record the out to keep the game tied, but Urbaniak strode to the plate. After fouling off a pair of tough pitches to stay alive, she ripped a double into the gap in right centerfield. Dvoracek motored around the bases to score just as the throw home reached the pitcher's circle as the team mobbed her before reaching the dugout.

Riley Czarnecki picked up the win in the second game after coming on in relief for the second time on the day. Urbaniak started the game in the circle and didn't allow a run on four hits in 2.1 innings while escaping out of some jams of her own. In the second, a pair of singles and an error put runners on second and third with one out before Urbaniak loaded the bases with a walk.

However, she registered her first of two strikeouts before a weak grounder back to the pitcher ended the threat. Czarnecki took over with runners on first and second with one out in the third and escaped the jam with a groundout and popout.

The Panthers scored in the fourth inning with a two-out triple, taking the lead in the pitcher's duel. Roosevelt had just three hits in the first four innings before it tied the game in the fifth on Pomele-Pen's infield single with the bases loaded.

Davenport scored three times on two hits in the seventh inning off Czarnecki. The freshman nearly escaped with just one run against after having runners on second and third with no outs. However, a strikeout and groundout were followed by an error to plate two more runs for the Panthers.

ROOSEVELT 6, DAVENPORT 0
The first inning was a microcosm of how the opening game of the doubleheader would go for both sides. Davenport had a two-out rally extinguished by Pearson, who threw out a runner trying to score from center field to end the inning. Roosevelt then manufactured a run with Brynn Dvoracek driving in Pearson for the game in the bottom of the frame.

The Lakers doubled the lead in the third as Pearson hit a single back to the pitcher before Pomele-Pen drove her in with a double. Kailey Hancock pulled off the Houdini act in the fourth, stranding runners on second and third after the Panthers put runners on the corners with the first two batters of the inning.

Roosevelt nearly ended the game in the fifth inning with a four-run outburst that ended with the winning run on the base paths. Williams began the inning with a single then Ella Dvoracek laid down a bunt single of her own. Pearson singled into left field, but an error by the Davenport outfielder allowed all three runners to come in a score.

Brynn Dvoracek resumed the momentum with a walk and Urbaniak walked as well before Libby Kreykes delivered an RBI single. The freshman catcher became the winning run as the potential eighth run, but the Lakers struck out twice.

Czarnecki pitched the final three innings for the Lakers to earn the save while allowing just one hit and striking out two. She finished the day with a win and a save in 7.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs and five hits against the Panthers.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will close the regular season Saturday as it hosts Ferris State for a GLIAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Senior Day in Rosemont
