Lakers Clinch Series Win Against Pride

HAMMOND, Ind. – Roosevelt secured its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series victory with a 7-6 win over Purdue Northwest at Ozinga Field on Saturday in the series finale.

The Lakers (10-30, 4-16 GLIAC) took three of four from the Pride this weekend to temporarily move into position to qualify for the conference tournament. Roosevelt managed just eight hits in Saturday's contest, but made the most of its chances in taking the lead and keeping it.

Purdue Northwest struck first with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning on a dropped flyball in the outfield. The Pride had a chance to extend the lead with runners on second and third with one out in the third, but Jake Glickman escaped with a groundout and flyout to strand them.

Roosevelt's first hit in the game came in the fourth inning on an infield single from Jack Kieffer. Although Kieffer was thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning, the single helped build momentum for the offense. Sebastian Casillas walked to open up the fifth inning and Kyle Jannenga quickly advanced him to third with a double to the right-field wall. Jack Hoh followed with a two-run single through the left side to tie the game, advancing to second on the throw home.

A groundout moved Hoh to third base for James Berry, who extended his hitting streak with 28 games with a triple down the right-field line. After a pitching change for the Pride, Kekoa Ogawa hit a triple in a nearly identical spot in the right-field corner to make it 4-2 Lakers.

The Pride cut the deficit to one in the sixth inning then ran themselves out of the seventh when they were caught stealing to end the frame with a runner in scoring position. Berry continued his heroics with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Casillas drew a bases-loaded walk then Jannenga reached on an error to make it 7-3 Roosevelt.

However, the Lakers' flair for the dramatic kicked in with five outs left as Purdue Northwest loaded the bases in the eighth inning. Kevin Schroer managed to escape with the lead intact, but a quick bottom half of the inning did little to settle the nerves. Schroer, though, was poised on the mound in the ninth and collected his third save of the season with a trio of flyballs in a 1-2-3 inning.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt makes the short trek to Trinity Christian on Wednesday for a single non-conference game against the Trolls starting at 3:30 p.m.
