Lakers Rally Past Trolls In Midweek Contest

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Roosevelt rallied for eight runs in the final two innings to defeat former conference foe Trinity Christian on Wednesday in Palos Heights.

The Lakers (11-30) trailed by two runs with just six outs remaining, but the bats came alive to crank out half of the team's 16 hits in the eighth and ninth innings. Harrison Kowalski started the eighth inning with a single up the middle then scored on Kekoa Ogawa's single. Ogawa finished the day 4 for 6 with four RBIs.

Luke Ulbert also hit a single and Jack Kieffer walked to load the bases for Sebastian Casillas to slap a single through the left side to plate a pair. Kyle Jannenga cleared the two runners on base with a double down the left-field line to give Roosevelt the 11-8 lead after eight innings.

In the ninth, Kowalski reached on an error then scored on James Berry's single after stealing second base. Ogawa scored Berry with a single and Casillas drove in his fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly that plated Ogawa. Casillas finished 2 for 5 with his four RBIs

Roosevelt did jump on the board in the first inning with a two-out rally sparked by a Trinity Christian error. Casillas singled up the middle to score Ulbert, but the Trolls responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Trinity Christian scored again in the bottom of the second to extend the lead to 3-1 before the Lakers tied the game in the third on back-to-back solo homers from Ogawa and Ulbert.

The game settled down for a bit before Roosevelt took the lead once again in the sixth inning. An error in the outfield allowed Jannenga to reach then Quinn O'Bryan walked and Jack Hoh hit a single to load the bases. Berry delivered with his first hit of the game, scoring two runs and extending his hitting streak to 29 games. Berry stole second before Ogawa drove in Hoh with a single to make it 6-3 Lakers.

Trinity Christian took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a 3-run homer then led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run as well. William Zalabak came on to get all three outs in the seventh, AJ Gliwa picked up three straight outs in the eighth after Zalabak found himself in a jam and Griffin Lamarche allowed just a one-out walk in the ninth to finish the win.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will continue its tour across its old conference with a four-game series this weekend against Olivet Nazarene. The Lakers will host the Tigers at Ozinga Field for a doubleheader on Friday then will travel to Bourbonnais on Saturday. Roosevelt will honor its 16 seniors prior to Friday's scheduled first pitch at 1 p.m. with Senior Day starting at approximately 12:15 p.m.
