DAVENPORT, Fla. – Roosevelt ended its spring break trip in Florida with two defeats Friday in Davenport, Fla.
The Lakers (5-8) squandered an early 4-0 lead against Malone, falling 5-4 in extra innings to start the day. They then dropped a 9-3 decision against Barry after the Buccaneers scored five times in the second inning. MALONE 5, ROOSEVELT 4 (10 INNINGS)
Roosevelt was quick to get on the board against the Pioneers with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Kekoa Ogawa followed
James Berry getting hit by a pitch with a double into centerfield that brought Berry around the bases to score. Ogawa later scored while
Jack Kieffer was in an extended rundown between first and second base after Ogawa stole third.
The small ball worked to perfection for the Lakers in the second inning after
Jojo Mack reached on a hit by pitch as well. The senior stole second base then moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from
Kyle Jannenga.
Andrew Lucas completed Mack's circuit with a sacrifice fly into centerfield that allowed the Lakers designated hitter to score.
Ogawa was again at the center of the offense in the third inning with a single into centerfield. The third baseman then stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Kieffer's single. That felt like more than enough for
Jake Glickman, who was perfect the first time around the Malone order. The righty allowed six hits and two runs in five innings of work, leaving the Lakers in a good position.
The Lakers had just one hit over the final seven innings and just one base runner reached second base as the Pioneers continued to apply pressure. Malone added one run in the seventh then tied the game in the eighth before winning it in the top of the 10
th.
BARRY 9, ROOSEVELT 3
The Lakers could not fully recover from Barry's second-inning explosion after Roosevelt took the lead in the top of the first and top of the second. Kieffer beat out a potential double play ball in the first inning to allow Berry to score from third base.
Gavin Millard then struck in the second with a single up the middle that scored
Jack Hoh, who reached on an error.
Barry scored once in the first inning before
Kaden Foran calmed down to escape the inning. The Lakers had chances to escape the second unscathed with two quick outs, but allowed five runs on three two-out hits to allow the Buccaneers to break the game open.
The Buccaneers added another run in the fourth and Ogawa answered back in the fifth with a triple. The Buccaneers added two more insurance runs in the seventh to complete the victory.
UP NEXT: The Lakers return home Saturday then take a short trip Sunday to Purdue Northwest for a non-conference game in Hammond, Ind. against the Pride.
