HAMMOND, Ind. – Roosevelt could not overcome a strong first inning output from Purdue Northwest in a 17-4 defeat in a non-league game against the Pride on Sunday in Hammond, Ind.
Purdue Northwest scored in all six innings it went to the dish and finished with 17 hits in the game. The first eight batters all reached base for the Pride in the first inning as they scored four times on five hits. However, the Lakers (5-9) were undeterred and started to mount their comeback attempt in the top of the second.
Jojo Mack was hit by a pitch to start the rally then
Quinn O'Bryan and Aidan Brushaber both walked to load the bases.
Gavin Millard delivered Roosevelt's first hit of the game with a single up the middle, which plated two runs.
After Purdue Northwest stretched its lead to 10-2, Millard started the Lakers offense in the fourth inning with a single. That hit was followed by a
James Berry single and Millard was able to advance to third courtesy of an error by the Pride.
Kekoa Ogawa drew a walk to load the bases again and
Christian Degroot picked up an RBI when he also earned a free pass.
The Pride continued to put up runs with one in the fourth, five in the fifth and one more in the sixth to put the pressure on Roosevelt's bats. In the top of the seventh,
Dimitri Spatharakis hit a pinch-hit single before O'Bryan took his place at first on a fielder's choice.
Harrison Kowlaski doubled to bring home O'Bryan with two outs for the final run of the game.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt head to Harrogate, Tennessee for a four-game series against Lincoln Memorial with one game Friday, a doubleheader Saturday then a series finale Sunday.
