Mack's Single Completes Lakers Comeback Against Hawks

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Jojo Mack capped off a comeback with an RBI single to propel Roosevelt to a split of its doubleheader Thursday against Shorter in Florida.

The Lakers (5-6) dropped the opening game of the twinbill 5-1 after the Hawks broke the game open in the sixth inning. In the back half of the doubleheader, Shorter jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Lakers rallied to tie the game in the fifth. Mack then delivered his game-winning hit in the sixth to drive in Kyle Jannenga for a 4-3 Roosevelt win.

SHORTER 5, ROOSEVELT 1
Kyle Maslan went the distance for the Lakers allowing five runs on eight hits with four of those runs being earned. He worked himself out of a jam in the second inning after the first run crossed the plate unearned. The freshman had runners on second and third with one out when he forced an RBI groundout then extinguished the threat with a strikeout.

Roosevelt's first of three hits didn't come until the fourth inning, but that didn't stop the Lakers from halving the deficit in the third. Aidan Brushaber reached on an error then moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt. Gavin Millard reached on another error, which allowed Brushaber to score and Millard to motor to third base.

The score remained 2-1 into the bottom of the sixth when Maslan found himself in another pickle with the bases loaded and two outs. Unfortunately, the Hawks were able to clear the bases with a single and the Lakers could only manage a single from Brushaber in the seventh.

ROOSEVELT 4, SHORTER 3
Shorter started out the game with a triple into right field and quickly took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout. The Hawks added a run in the third inning and another in the top of the fifth off Kellan Turner, who allowed six hits and struck out three in five innings on the mound.

Roosevelt's comeback began in the bottom half of the fifth when Christian Degroot worked a walk and Mack singled through the right side. Quinn O'Bryan attempted to move the runners over with a bunt, but instead reached base on a throwing error from the pitcher.

Shorter changed pitchers, but the rally didn't stop. Andrew Lucas hit an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Lakers on the board and Sebastian Casillas followed with a pinch-hit single that scored Mack. Two batters later, Berry scored O'Bryan with a single up the middle to tie the game.

AJ Gliwa allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base, but worked around the runners to pitch a clean sixth inning. Degroot walked with one out in the bottom of the sixth then advanced to second on a passed ball before Jannenga pinch ran. Mack then came through in the clutch with a single into centerfield, and eventually made it to third before the Hawks escaped the inning.

Kevin Schroer pitched a perfect seventh inning for his first save of the season.

UP NEXT: The Lakers will finish their spring break trip with contests against Barry and Malone on Friday.
