LAKELAND, Fla. – An early two-out rally was enough to push No. 6 Florida Southern past Roosevelt 14-3 on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup in Lakeland, Fla.
The Lakers (4-5) showed no fear in the first inning against their top-10 foe with each of the first three hitters smacking singles.
Jack Kieffer hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to drive in
Gavin Millard, but
James Berry was thrown out tagging up to third on the play.
Omar Abuelhija escaped an early bases-loaded jam in the first thanks in large part to
Kyle Jannenga picking off a runner at first for the first out of the inning. The senior then retired the first two batters in the second before trouble brewed for the Lakers. Three of the next four hitters launched extra-base hits to make it 3-1 Florida Southern and the Mocs left the second with a 5-1 edge.
Roosevelt put runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, but couldn't score. The Mocs hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to increase their lead and tacked on four more in the sixth as well. Millard led off the seventh with a solo homer and Berry followed with a triple to the gap in right centerfield. Koa Ogawa hit the RBI sacrifice fly to score Berry, but that was the last of the Roosevelt offense.
The trio of Berry, Millard and Ogawa had eight of Roosevelt's nine hits in the game with all three excelling against the Mocs. Millard was 2 for 4 with the two runs scored and also drew a walk. Berry was 3 for 5 and Ogawa was 3 for 4 with the sacrifice fly RBI.
Jojo Mack had the only other hit for the Lakers, an infield single in the fourth inning that ended with him stranded on third.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt will rest Wednesday with an off day before returning to the field Thursday with a doubleheader against Shorter starting at 9:30 a.m.
