Lakers Take Split From Parkside On Road

KENOSHA, Wis. – Roosevelt roared back in the second game of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to split its twinbill against Parkside on Wednesday in Wisconsin.

The first game was forgettable as the Rangers scored early and often in a 15-4 rout of the Lakers. Yet, Kailey Hancock held Parkside to just one run and four hits in the second game to help Roosevelt (9-15, 3-3 GLIAC) win 5-1 to keep its record even in conference play.

PARKSIDE 15, ROOSEVELT 4
The Rangers got on the board early with five runs in the first after the Lakers stranded a runner on third in the top of the frame. Roosevelt put two runners on base in the second inning, but again came up empty. Meanwhile, Parkside scored four runs in the second inning then tacked on six more in the third to build a 15-0 lead.

Roosevelt's patience at the plate paid off in the fourth inning as the Lakers began to mount a rally to trim the large deficit. The first two batters of the frame were hit by pitches then Kendall Pearson drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with no outs. Ava Kaspar came through with a single to left field that plated two and advanced Pearson all the way to third.

Caitlin Williams sacrificed Kaspar over to second then Ella Dvoracek and Rebecca Urbaniak hit back-to-back run scoring singles for the Lakers. Dvoracek finished the game a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate to lead Roosevelt's offense.

ROOSEVELT 5, PARKSIDE 1
Hancock stole the show for the Lakers in the second game with her complete game masterpiece. The sophomore rarely found herself in any trouble, and when the Rangers did put runners in scoring position, she handled the pressure with poise to escape. She stranded runners on the corners in the fifth inning after Parkside scored its only run of the game then pitched a perfect sixth and seventh innings to preserve the victory.

The Lakers nearly struck first in the second inning after Brynn Dvoracek led off the inning with a single into left field. The senior first baseman moved to second on a wild pitch then took third on a foul ball along the first-base side after it was caught. Although, the Lakers didn't manage to find a run-scoring hit in that situation, they did a few innings later.

Urbaniak handled the scoring herself with a two-out home run in the fourth inning, the Lakers' first over-the-fence homer of the season. Bianca Gallegos followed with a double then Kreykes found a hole for a run-scoring single, taking second base while the Rangers tried to catch Gallegos at the plate.

In the fifth inning, Williams led off with a walk then Ella Dvoracek picked up an infield single. The two stole a base on a double steal to put themselves in scoring position, but the next two batters recorded outs before Brynn Dvoracek scored them both with a single. The Lakers then matched Parkside's fifth-inning run with a run in the sixth courtesy of an Ella Dvoracek fielder's choice that allowed pinch runner Sydni Taylor to score.

UP NEXT: Due to a gloomy weather forecast for Sunday, the Lakers will now face Wayne State on Friday in Rosemont for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex.
