Big Innings Doom Lakers Against Warriors

ROSEMONT – Roosevelt could not avoid the big innings Friday while getting swept by Wayne State at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

The Lakers (9-17, 3-5 GLIAC) surrendered six runs in the fourth inning and could not fully climb out of that hole in a 6-4 loss in the opener. In the second game, the Warriors struck for four in the first then tacked out insurance runs late to beat Roosevelt 9-3.

WAYNE STATE 6, ROOSEVELT 4
Roosevelt held the momentum early in the game, immediately threatening the Warriors in the first inning. Kendall Pearson drew a walk then Athena Pomele-Pen hit a sharp single into right field, allowing Pearson to move to third while she advanced to second on the throw. The Lakers couldn't convert on their runners in scoring position with one out, then left the bases loaded in the second inning.

The Lakers finally broke through in the third inning of the game when Libby Kreykes hit a single into right field that scored Brynn Dvoracek from second. However, the lead was short-lived as the Warriors had five hits and took advantage of two Roosevelt errors to put up six runs in the fourth.

Not to be deterred, Roosevelt put itself in a position to quickly cut into the deficit in the fifth. Pomele-Pen and Dvoracek each hit a single then Pomele-Pen scored on a Rebecca Urbaniak single into center field. Kreykes reached on a fielder's choice that took out the lead runner, but Bianca Gallegos smashed a triple to make it 6-4.

Ella Dvoracek hit a single and stole second for Roosevelt's only offense in the sixth inning, but the Lakers had a chance to make some noise in the seventh. Kreykes hit a two-out double into the gap in right center, and was replaced at second by Sydni Taylor as a pinch runner. Gallegos smacked a single into center field, but Wayne State was able to throw the ball to the plate in time to nab Taylor and end the game.

The Lakers out-hit the Warriors 11-8 in the game.

WAYNE STATE 9, ROOSEVELT 3
The Lakers were forced to play from behind for the entire second game after allowing four runs in the first inning. Pomele-Pen was able to take one back with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame that scored Ella Dvoracek after her leadoff single. Roosevelt cut the deficit again in the second when Kreykes led off the inning with a single then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. Caitlin Williams reached on a bunt single, giving Dvoracek the opportunity to drive in a run with an infield single.

Wayne State scored once in the third to make it 5-2, and Roosevelt had its best chance to tie the game in the fifth. Ella Dvoracek and Urbaniak both got on base to start the frame then Brynn Dvoracek was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. However, a hard-hit ball to left field ended the threat and the Warriors tacked on two more in the sixth.

Angelina Diaz gave the Lakers some life in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out triple then scored on Ella Dvoracek's single into left field. Yet that was all Roosevelt could muster in the inning before the Warriors scored twice more in the seventh then retired the Lakers in order after Pomele-Pen's leadoff single.

UP NEXT: The Lakers host Saginaw Valley State on Saturday for a doubleheader in Rosemont starting at 1 p.m.
