Lakers Make GLIAC Tournament Despite Loss

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Roosevelt qualified for the 2025 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday despite losing 106-51 at Grand Valley State in the regular season finale for both teams.

The visitors could not overcome a slow start against the hosts, trailing 17-0 at the first media timeout. Roosevelt made just one of its first 12 shots to fall behind 31-3, and it never managed to inch closer than 25 the rest of the way. The Lakers' only points in the first seven minutes came courtesy of a Forte Prater driving layup and a free throw from Khalil Haywood, and the Lakers (9-19, 6-14 GLIAC) shot just 27 percent from the floor in the opening half and trailed by 37 at intermission.

Despite the loss, Roosevelt received the help it needed from around the conference to win the tiebreaker with Saginaw Valley State for the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament. The Lakers split with the Cardinals, so the tiebreakers moved to the teams' records against the other GLIAC schools starting at the No. 1 seed and moving down. The tie would be broken at the No. 6 seed as the Lakers swept Wayne State while Saginaw Valley State dropped both games to the Warriors.

Prater finished the game with 15 points, leading the three Lakers who finished in double figures in the loss. Enari Thomas added 10 points as did Daniel Reed while Haywood ended up with nine points. Roosevelt made just 3 of 24 from behind the arc in the game, but Haywood and Griffin Yaklich both had double figures in rebounds for the Lakers. Haywood had eight offensive rebounds amongst his 11 boards and Yaklich secured eight of his 10 rebounds on the defensive end.

UP NEXT: After winning the tibreaker, Roosevelt will travel to No. 21 and regular-season GLIAC champion Michigan Tech in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
