Turchin Scores 1,000th Point In Loss To Rangers

CHICAGO – Jayla Turchin scored her 1,000th career collegiate point in Roosevelt's 72-62 setback Thursday night at the Goodman Center in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Parkside.

The senior from Evanston hit 1,000 career points with a 3-pointer early in the third quarter that cut the Lakers' deficit to nine. Turchin's career total includes her freshman season at Lewis, but she is still approaching 1,000 points in a Lakers uniform, sitting just 20 points away after scoring 17 on Thursday.

Turchin's 3-pointer was one of several moments in the second half when it felt like Roosevelt was gearing up to make a comeback against Parkside. However, the Lakers (7-12, 5-8 GLIAC) struggled to connect their offense with stops on the other end of the floor, so although they were able to carve the Rangers' lead into single digits, it never dropped below nine in the second half.

Roosevelt and Parkside both failed to score for much of the first quarter even though the Lakers began the game with a beautiful play that earned Marie Outlay a wide-open layup. Yet the contest stayed 3-2 in Roosevelt's favor until a Jalyssa Carrasco layup with 4:24 left in the first quarter and the 10th point of the game wasn't scored until there were 87 seconds left in the period. After scoring nine points in the first eight and a half minutes of the first, the two teams scored six in the final 90 seconds.

The Lakers, though, could not solve the rims at their home arena as open looks battled the iron and bounced out unsuccessfully. Roosevelt missed all 14 of its 3-pointers in the first half and made just six shots total, but still managed to just trail by nine in the second half. The shooting improved tremendously in the second half as Roosevelt shot 38 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes.

A sign of the odd offensive night for Roosevelt was Luka Malinka's stat line as the Danish senior scored 11 of her 17 points at the free throw line. Malinka didn't make her first shot until 2:50 remained in the game, but she kept her head down and continued to attack, drawing the contact she needed to contribute. She was also a tremendous asset on the glass with eight rebounds, one fewer than Turchin's nine and two less than Outlay, who led the team with 10 boards.

UP NEXT: The Lakers get a rare weekend off before returning to the court Monday in Hammond, Ind. to face Purdue Northwest at 5 p.m.
