Historic Second Half Propels Lakers Past Pride

HAMMOND, Ind. – Roosevelt used a historic second half to power past Purdue Northwest 107-84 on Monday night in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup in Hammond, Ind.

After the Pride rallied to cut the Lakers' lead to three entering halftime, they simply ran out of answers for the Roosevelt offense. Over the course of the final 20 minutes, the Lakers tied or broke severa; school records and were on the precipice of setting even more. The Lakers (8-12, 6-8 GLIAC) tied the program record with 65 second-half points while setting the school record for field goals made with 23 and shooting percentage at 65.7 percent.

In the third quarter, it was the Jayla Turchin show as the senior scored 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting to help push the lead out to nine by the end of the period. Lexie Sinclair took over in the fourth with 12 points on 4 of 5 shooting while hitting both of her 3-point attempts and both of her free throws. Jalyssa Carrasco dished out four of her team-high eight assists in the fourth quarter as the Lakers nearly tied the single-quarter record for 3-pointers made and shooting percentage.

Yet none of them were able to match Luka Malinka's career night in which she scored 35 points and secured her first double-double with a career-best 10 rebounds. The senior from Denmark made 6 of 9 from the floor in the first quarter to score 15 of Roosevelt's 27 points in the first 10 minutes. She finished the game 13 of 21 overall and was a consistent scoring threat throughout the game.

The same could be said for Marie Outlay, who was 7 of 12 shooting and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line, to score 21 points. The sophomore also had six rebounds, five steals and a pair of blocks in a bounceback game for the Wisconsin native. She added seven points in the first quarter as well to help the charge for the Lakers.

Roosevelt started strong to build a 10-point lead by the midway point of the first quarter then extended that lead to as many as 14. Purdue Northwest didn't give up that easily and mounted a few comeback attempts, but the Pride could never retake the lead during an abnormally weak shooting spell for Roosevelt. Instead, the Lakers took control of the game in the second half by shooting a perfect 12 for 12 from the foul line in the second half and connected on 7 of 13 3-point attempts.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns to the Goodman Center on Saturday to kick off a four-game homestand during the GLIAC's annual Play4Kay weekend. The Lakers will host Saginaw Valley State at 1 p.m. and joins the rest of the conference in raising money for cancer research in partnership with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
