BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Roosevelt had three players finish with 20 points for the first time in program history to knock off Ferris State 83-73 on Monday night in Big Rapids, Mich.
Luka Malinka led the trio with 27 points, setting a new career high in the process, and made nine of her 15 attempts, including 6 of 11 from behind the arc.
Lexie Sinclair set a new career high for the second time in three days with 22 points, matching Malinka with 13 second-half points.
Jayla Turchin scored 11 second-half points, including four in the final minute, to finish with 20 points even.
An offensive surge of that magnitude needed someone running the show, and
Jalyssa Carrasco did her part with a career-best 12 assists. The senior also had eight rebounds, falling just shy of her first career double-double. Turchin did finish with a double-double, however, and nearly had the second triple-double in program history after coming up with seven steals to go along with 11 rebounds. Malinka and Turchin also had five assists each as Roosevelt finished with a season-best 26 helpers.
The Bulldogs entered the game in second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings and buoyed by a 53-point win over the Lakers in December. It looked like the game might have a similar fate when Ferris State scored eight points in 69 seconds to start the game. The lead grew to as many as 10 before Roosevelt (7-11, 5-7 GLIAC) found its response.
The Lakers finished the quarter on a 25-4, putting together its best offensive quarter of the season in the process. Roosevelt shot 62.5 percent from the field and made five 3-pointers in the first 10 minutes, but also worked its way to the line for nine free throws. Malinka scored 14 points and had two assists in the first quarter to lead the way for the Lakers.
Scoring was at a premium in the second quarter for both sides with 23 total points tallied between the two teams. The Bulldogs closed the gap to four at halftime then scored out of the break to make it a two-point game. Despite a 7-0 Lakers run to drive the advantage back up to nine, Ferris State not only tied the game at 53, but then took a 56-53 edge with 3:28 left in the third. Sinclair answered with a 3-pointer to kick off a 10-0 run to end the quarter and restore a seven-point advantage for Roosevelt.
Every time the Bulldogs tried to make a run in the fourth, the Lakers were ready with a big shot. Turchin nailed a transition 3-pointer after Ferris State cut the deficit to one, and Sinclair buried a triple with 1:42 when the Bulldogs got within three. Roosevelt was 7 of 19 from long range in the second half with Malinka and Sinclair both making three 3-pointers over the final 20 minutes.
