CALEDONIA, Mich. – Roosevelt used a dominant effort on the glass to outlast Davenport 62-50 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Thursday night in Michigan.
Both teams finished the game shooting 35 percent from the floor, but the Lakers (12-13, 10-9 GLIAC) made the most of their misses. Roosevelt held a 54-36 edge in rebounding, which included grabbing a season-high 24 offensive rebounds to maintain possession. The Lakers turned those second chances into 25 points, 10 of which came in the pivotal second quarter.
The Lakers trailed by a point after the first quarter and the lead continued to change hands often in the first half of the second quarter. Roosevelt finally took control by closing the half on a 10-2 run to break a 19-19 tie with the help of a pair of key offensive rebounds.
Emma Yurich rebounded a missed 3-pointer and 10 seconds later sank a triple of her own to give the Lakers a six-point lead.
Kencia Levasseur then cleaned up her own miss in the final seconds as Roosevelt took a 29-21 lead into the locker room.
Jayla Turchin turned into Roosevelt's closer in the second half, scoring 13 of her team-best 18 points over the final 20 minutes. She scored eight points in the fourth quarter as the Lakers turned a six-point edge into a lead as large as 17 against the Panthers. Turchin also finished with eight rebounds in the game, mostly on the defensive end.
Marie Outlay produced another double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive glass. The sophomore also added four more steals to her total to bring her one theft away from tying the school record she set last season. Levasseur grabbed eight offensive rebounds among her team-high 12 boards and also chipped in seven points.
UP NEXT: With the victory, Roosevelt has secured the sixth seed in the GLIAC Tournament next week and will travel on March 5 to the No. 3 seed. The Lakers will finish their regular season Saturday with a stiff test against No. 2 Grand Valley State on the road before turning their attention to the postseason.
