CALEDONIA, Mich. – In a game Roosevelt needed to win, the Lakers gutted out a 73-60 win over Davenport in a crucial Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Thursday night in Caledonia, Mich.
The Lakers (9-18, 6-13 GLIAC) shot 51 percent from the field and again took full advantage of their opponents miscues with 25 points off turnovers. But it was never easy as Roosevelt dealt with foul trouble for much of the game, at one point in the second half having five different players with four fouls. Yet only one person fouled out and the rest of the rotation was able to counter every time the Panthers attempted a comeback.
Roosevelt never trailed in the second half, but Davenport also didn't make it easy on the Lakers in the final 20 minutes. The Lakers built a 14-point lead by the time the first media timeout of the second half hit a little more than four minutes into the half. Within seven minutes, the advantage was down to two points, but
Fred Robinson IV made a 3-pointer to kickstart an 8-1 run over the next 90 seconds.
Davenport again took its best shot at Roosevelt in the final five minutes, trimming the nine-point lead down to just two with 3:47 left in the game. This time, it was
Forte Prater knocking down one of his signature step-back jumpers to increase the lead. The senior scored eight of Roosevelt's final points to help the Lakers close out the game with a 12-1 run over the last 3:30 of action.
Prater finished with 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds while Robinson had 18 points and four steals to go along with four rebounds.
Kennedy Brown and
Enari Thomas both scored 10 points off the bench for the Lakers, who finished with 15 steals as well on the defensive end to lead to those 25 points off turnovers.
UP NEXT: The Lakers again face close to a must-win situation in their season finale at 3 p.m. Saturday against Grand Valley State on the road.
