CHICAGO – Roosevelt could not keep up with the hot-shooting Northern Michigan Wildcats in a 90-52 setback Monday night at the Goodman Center in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Wildcats scored the first eight points of the game and didn't look back despite some strong runs from the Lakers in the first half. Roosevelt (11-13, 9-9 GLIAC) made four of its last six shots in the first quarter to cut a 12-point deficit down to eight. The Lakers then started the second quarter on an 8-2 run that cut the deficit down to two with 7:27 left in the half.
However, the Lakers went nearly five minutes without scoring and the Wildcats were able to capitalize to push their lead to nine at intermission. Roosevelt came out strong in the second half to cut the edge to six with the ball, but Northern Michigan shot close to 60 percent in the second half to pull away for good.
It was an unfortunate end to the home careers of Roosevelt's five seniors who were honored before the game.
Luka Malinka scored 10 points to lead the group, followed by
Jayla Turchin, who finished with nine points and five rebounds.
Jalyssa Carrasco dished out four assists and scored four points while also grabbing five rebounds.
Lexie Sinclair scored seven points on 3 of 4 shooting and also had four rebounds while
Grace Beyer missed both of her shots in her first start of the season.
Marie Outlay led all Lakers with 11 points and added to her staggering steals total with seven more thefts in the loss. She is now five steals away from the single-season program record she set last season as a freshman.
Ava Brandenburg scored five points, recorded two steals and had an assist in her first major action in nearly a month.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt finishes the regular season on the road, starting Thursday at Davenport with tip-off scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
