SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Roosevelt's second-half comeback was not enough as the Lakers fell 87-76 to Illinois-Springfield on Sunday in a non-conference game in the Illinois state capital.
It was a tough start for the Lakers after they fell behind by 16 points in the first quarter. In what quickly has become the hallmark of this team, Roosevelt (1-6) reeled off a 12-0 run in just under three minutes midway through the second quarter to cut the deficit to seven. Five of the first seven points of the run came at the free throw line with the other two being the layup portion of Isabel Lindo's three-point play.
Unfortunately, the Prairie Stars were able to extend their lead to 20 at halftime and the Lakers had to battle from behind again. Roosevelt trimmed the deficit to eight late in the third quarter then again reached single digits with two minutes left. The Lakers shot nearly 40 percent from the field over the final three quarters and outscored UIS 67-62 in the final 30 minutes.
Marie Outlay led the five Lakers in double figures with 19 points and she also added six steals and two blocks on the defensive end for Roosevelt. Isabella Pitta recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 17 rebounds, two boards shy of the single-game record. Roosevelt finished with a 39-32 edge on the glass, including 18 offensive rebounds that turned into 12 second-chance points.
Aubrey Leonard chipped in 14 and Lindo shot 4 of 5 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line to add 13 points. Kelly Boyle closed out the double-figures scorers with 12 points and six assists. Roosevelt finished with a season-best 18 assists as Leonard and Outlay both added three helpers and Lindo had four of her own.
