Lakers Fall In Battle Of Unbeatens At No. 20 Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Roosevelt's unbeaten streak in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play came to an end Sunday with a 4-1 loss at No. 20 Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Mich.

The Lakers (5-2-3, 3-1-1 GLIAC) had a 10-game unbeaten stretch in regulation against GLIAC foes entering Sunday's match, which was a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in the conference this season.  However, the Cardinals took advantage of two penalty kicks to build out a lead from which Roosevelt could not recover on the road.

Saginaw Valley State struck first in the 23rd minute with a one-time rocket on a loose ball that the Lakers were trying to clear out of the penalty box. Just seven minutes later, Valdemar Nambo was whistled for a foul in the box and the Cardinals converted the penalty kick to make it 2-0.

Fynn Mewes scored his team- and conference-leading sixth goal of the season in the 35th minute to help the Lakers narrow the gap. The German forward collected the ball off a cross with his back to goal, but quickly spun around and sent a left-footed strike into the upper left corner.

Roosevelt barely had time to breathe in the second half before the Cardinals were awarded another penalty kick. This time it was senior goalkeeper Eric Carvajal was charged with the foul as he charged for a loose ball in a race with the Saginaw Valley State attacker. The Cardinals again converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-1 in the 50th minute.

A little more than four minutes later, the Cardinals added another goal on the counter attack to complete the scoring. Saginaw Valley State outshot Roosevelt 16-7 in the match, though the gap was just 8-6 over the final 45 minutes. The Lakers forced four saves from the Cardinals keeper while Carvajal made three stops.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt has one week to recover and recuperate before returning to Morris Field next Sunday for a noon kickoff against St. Cloud State. The match will also be Senior Day for the Lakers with festivities scheduled to start around 11:30 a.m.
