ARLINGTON HEIGHTS –
Fynn Mewes scored with just over four minutes left to lift Roosevelt to a 1-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over St. Cloud State on Sunday afternoon at Morris Field.
Known for their patient buildup from the back, the Lakers (6-2-3, 4-1-1 GLIAC) showed they could just as easily move quickly from defense into attack. It took just 18 seconds from when
Luca Swinton stole the ball deep in his own end for Mewes to put the ball into the back of the net.
Swinton poked the ball free and immediately sent the ball towards midfield for
Oskar Schuster. The German forward controlled the ball and looked for an easy pass, yet none was available so Schuster turned and sprinted past the Huskies defender. He dribbled around an attempted poke into the middle of the field and sent the through ball to
Caco Fernandez.
Fernandez could have easily taken a shot on goal after Schuster's pass, but with the goalkeeper bearing down on him, Fernandez made a different decision. He caught the goalie flat-footed in his attempt to stop the shot that the centering pass was placed perfectly for Mewes to run onto it and slide it past the diving keeper.
It was one of just three shots on goal all game for the Lakers, who held an 11-7 advantage in shot attempts as well. Mewes had an attempt stopped in the first half when he split a pair of defenders, but could not fit the shot into the short side on the tough angle. In the 83
rd minute, Schuster one-timed a pass from
Rafael Rios to the right corner of the net, but the keeper changed his momentum to stop the shot.
The Lakers showed off their ability to maintain possession in the first half, keeping the ball away from the Huskies for most of the opening 45 minutes. However, it was St. Cloud State that had the best chance of the half with a long-range effort that
Jakob Mathews dove to swat away in the 12
th minute.
Roosevelt was under pressure for much of the second half as well, but never were in true danger. The Huskies managed just three shot attempts in the second half as the Lakers defense proved their excellence at defending in the air and on the ground. St. Cloud State's forays into the box were thwarted by the Lakers and the few times the Huskies were able to get shots away, they were no threat to
Eric Carvajal.
Mathews had Roosevelt's only two saves of the game in his first career appearance for the Lakers, which coincided with the program's Senior Day on Sunday. Mathews earned the start before Carvajal, a fellow senior, played the second half. The Lakers honored their 10 seniors pregame and all eight who were available to play saw the field in the win.
Among those seniors honored were
Valdemar Nambo, who played all 90 minutes on defense and
Ryusei Ogawa, who earned a start and played well on the right wing in 37 minutes. Regular starters Fernandez and Swinton played their normal time, and
Oswaldo Perez joined Schuster in coming off the bench on Senior Day. The other two seniors honored were
Matteo Chiti and
Khori Miles, both of whom were inactive due to injury.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt faces a compact week with a Wednesday home match against Purdue Northwest set for 7 p.m. at Morris Field followed by a rematch with the Huskies on Friday in Minnesota.
