CALEDONIA, Mich. –
Fynn Mewes poked home a pass from
Krystian Niziolek in the 83
rd minute to lift Roosevelt to a 2-1 win over Davenport in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday in Caledonia, Mich.
The goal was the breakthrough the Lakers desperately needed in the second half as they applied a lot of pressure onto the Davenport half of the field after the Panthers tied the game. Roosevelt attempted 17 shots over the final 45 minutes, but just two managed to reach the Panthers goalkeeper. However, it only took one for the Lakers to claim all three points from the match.
Mewes' team-leading fifth goal of the season came from some hard work in the midfield for the Lakers to win the ball and control it.
Luca Swinton was able to curve a pass around the Davenport midfielder to Niziolek, who quickly barreled in on goal. Mewes was late to join the play, but quickly found himself in space and he moved the ball past a defender for him to then slot into the far corner.
The Lakers (5-1-3, 3-0-1 GLIAC) received an early break as the Panthers went down a man less than six minutes into the game after a handball in the box. Although Roosevelt did not convert the ensuing penalty kick, it did heap a lot of pressure onto Davenport. It paid off in the ninth minute when
Caco Fernandez took a pass from
Rafael Rios and rocketed a shot from 28 yards out to give the Lakers the lead.
Davenport equalized with some early second-half pressure, and nearly took the lead as well. However,
Eric Carvajal was in perfect position to stop the chance in front of the net for one of his four saves in the game. Roosevelt finished with a 22-12 edge in shot attempts while drawing 15 fouls from Davenport and only committing eight.
UP NEXT: It's a battle of the unbeaten GLIAC teams as Roosevelt heads to No. 20 Saginaw Valley State to continue what quickly became a hot rivalry between the two. The Lakers claimed both matches in the regular season last season, but the Cardinals took home the conference tournament title on penalty kicks.
