Roosevelt Drops Contest At Wayne State

DETROIT – Roosevelt's strong start on offense could not carry the Lakers in a 75-66 setback on Monday evening against Wayne State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in Detroit.

The Lakers were electric in the opening half, shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range over the first 20 minutes. It began with Luka Malinka lighting up the scoreboard from behind the arc in the first quarter as she knocked down 3 of 4 from long range to give Roosevelt (5-11, 3-7 GLIAC) a two-point edge after 10 minutes.

After sinking 5 of 9 from 3-point in the first quarter, the Lakers were able to find more success inside in the second quarter, shooting 57 percent overall for the period. Roosevelt scored the first eight points of the quarter to take its largest lead of the day at 10 points just two and a half minutes into the stanza. Malinka scored 15 of her team-high 19 points in the first half and Jayla Turchin scored nine of her 12 points in the first half as well.

Yet the Lakers still trailed by four at halftime and neither team was able to do much on offense in the third quarter. Roosevelt was able to trim the deficit down to one minute midway through the fourth when Turchin made a hook shot in the lane then Lexie Sinclair answered a Wayne State 3 with one of her own. But the Warriors scored the next nine points and kept the Lakers off the board for nearly four minutes, finally allowing a Malinka bucket with eight seconds left.

Sinclair finished with 13 points to round out the trio of Lakers in double figures while Marie Outlay grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go along with her eight points. Makiah Hawk blocked four shots in 11 minutes on the floor and Jalyssa Carrasco dished out six assists in the loss.

UP NEXT: The Lakers are back on the road next weekend with a trip to Lake Superior State on Saturday at noon in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
