DETROIT –
Enari Thomas' three-point play with about two minutes left lifted Roosevelt to a much-needed 67-63 win over Wayne State on Monday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Detroit.
The back-and-forth battle reached its peak midway through the second half when the Warriors went on an 11-0 run in just over two minutes to take a one-point lead.
Fred Robinson IV answered with a 3-pointer to stop the run, but Wayne State simply responded with seven straight points. Then it was Thomas' time to shine in the clutch for the Lakers.
Roosevelt trailed by two points when Thomas brought the ball up the court and awaited a screen from
Daniel Reed. Thomas was able to get around the defender and methodically back down the next defender into the paint before turning and hitting the jump shot while getting fouled. He calmly sank the free throw to give the Lakers a 61-60 lead, an advantage they would not surrender.
It was an overall big game for Thomas, who scored 29 points to lead the Lakers (6-12, 3-7 GLIAC) in the game. Thomas was nearly flawless from the floor in the second half, making six of his eight shots, and his free throw with two minutes left was one of four straight he made to seal the game.
The Lakers made it a point to keep the Warriors off the 3-point line and challenged Wayne State to find other ways to score. The Warriors made just 4 of 29 from behind the arc in the game to bring their shooting percentage below 40 percent. Wayne State shot just 32.3 percent from the field in the first half as Roosevelt opened up a six-point halftime lead behind 12 points from Thomas.
Robinson added 16 points, mostly as a 3-point sniper, making 4 of 7 in the game, including 3 of 4 in the second half.
Griffin Yaklich took care of the glass with 11 rebounds and chipped in four points as well. Roosevelt shot 45 percent from the field in the victory with just two player finishing in double figures.
Aedan Campos scored just six points, but his second-half 3-pointer set the table for Thomas' heroics by trimming the deficit to two.
UP NEXT: The Lakers are back in Michigan next weekend with a trip to face two ranked foes, starting Saturday with a 2 p.m. tipoff against No. 14 Lake Superior State.
