UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – An early deficit was too much for Roosevelt to overcome Saturday in an 80-64 loss at Saginaw Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Lakers (5-10, 3-6 GLIAC) surrendered the first 10 points of the game in just a little under three minutes, forcing an early timeout.
Jayla Turchin hit a 3-pointer out of the timeout to put Roosevelt on the board, but the Lakers couldn't cut the deficit closer than six before eventually trailing by 12 after 10 minutes.
It was a much better second quarter for the Lakers as they trimmed the deficit to eight at halftime behind nearly 50 percent shooting from the field. Turchin and
Kencia Levasseur shared the team lead with eight points at halftime while
Jalyssa Carrasco had seven rebounds and four assists in the first half. Roosevelt got to within 46-41 early in the third quarter, its smallest deficit of the day, before the Cardinals went on another 10-0 run.
Turchin led the three Lakers in double figures with 19 points while Carrasco tied her career high with a team-best nine rebounds. The duo were also the keys to running the Roosevelt offense with Carrasco dishing out five assists and Turchin helping on four buckets.
Lexie Sinclair chipped in 14 points for the Lakers and
Luka Malinka added 10 as Roosevelt finished at just 32.8 percent from the field.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt will try to earn a split of its road trip Monday night at Wayne State with tipoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
