MARQUETTE, Mich. – A back-and-forth Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup did not break Roosevelt's way Monday evening as Northern Michigan held on for a 60-56 win over the Lakers in Marquette, Michigan.
The lead changed hands 10 times in the contest, including four times in the final four minutes of action, as neither team was able to pull away from the other. The largest lead for either team was six points, a mark both the Lakers and Wildcats held in a topsy-turvy third quarter. The two teams also had the lead for nearly identical spans with Roosevelt holding it for 18:22 and Northern Michigan for 17:59.
Neither team was able to lead by more than a possession until
Jayla Turchin sank a pair of free throws with about four minutes left in the second quarter to give the Lakers a five-point lead. Yet the advantage was down to three points just 13 seconds later and Roosevelt (4-8, 2-4 GLIAC) was able to maintain that lead heading into the locker room.
Luka Malinka connected from 3-point range early in the third quarter to give the Lakers their largest lead of the game. Yet Roosevelt didn't score another field goal for seven minutes when
Marie Outlay cut the deficit to three with a jumper. Malinka finished the quarter with a layup to make it a three-point contest entering the fourth quarter.
After scoring 12 points in the first half, Turchin was limited to just two points in the third quarter. But she made a big impact in the fourth for Roosevelt with five points to keep the Lakers in the game.
Kencia Levasseur gave Roosevelt its first lead of the fourth quarter with 3:06 left when she made a layup then Malinka gave the Lakers a one-point lead with 41 seconds left with a 3-pointer.
Turchin finished with 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Lakers in both categories and Malinka added 11 points while Outlay chipped in nine.
