CHICAGO – Roosevelt had four players finish in double figures to help the Lakers blitz past Davenport 87-48 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday at the Goodman Center.
Luka Malinka led the charge for the Lakers with 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting, but it was a true team effort behind the senior sharpshooter.
Jayla Turchin scored 14 points and added five steals while
Jalyssa Carrasco dished out nine assists.
Kencia Levasseur and
Marie Outlay become the first Lakers teammates in nearly five years to both record a double-double in the same game as they produced matching 13-point, 10-rebound stat lines. Outlay also led the Lakers with seven steals, the eighth time in the sophomore's career that she has had at least five thefts.
The first quarter was a feeling out process for both teams despite the frenetic action on both ends of the court. The first whistle didn't come for more than three minutes and Roosevelt wasn't charged with a foul until the second quarter. Turchin's 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the first quarter was the difference as it gave the Lakers a three-point edge after 10 minutes.
The Lakers (5-8, 3-4 GLIAC) owned the second quarter by limiting the Panthers to just 2 of 12 shooting and six points over the period. Meanwhile, the Lakers put together an 18-0 run that spanned most of the final seven minutes in the quarter to open up a 20-point advantage. Malinka scored eight points in the second quarter, including knocking down both of her 3-point attempts, and Levasseur chipped in six points in the period.
Momentum did not carry over into the third quarter for the Lakers as the Panthers kept pace with Roosevelt. The undermanned Davenport squad was worn out by the fourth quarter when the Lakers scored the first 21 points of the stanza. Even though the shots didn't fall at a high clip in the frame, Roosevelt held a 16-6 edge in rebounding and scored 11 points off turnovers to pull away.
Roosevelt held Davenport to just 28.6 percent shooting over the final three quarters in the game. Meanwhile, the Lakers shot an even 50 percent from the field in the second half to pull away from the tired Panthers. In particular, the Lakers feasted on the interior and defense with Roosevelt scoring 34 of its points in the paint and 26 points off turnovers.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will make school history Monday evening when No. 1 Grand Valley State comes to the Goodman Center for a 5:30 p.m. contest. It will be the first time in Roosevelt's recent athletics history that a team has hosted a No. 1 team in the country.
