GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Roosevelt's magic ran out Sunday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to Davenport in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in Grand Rapids, Mich.
It was the first loss of the season for the Lakers (3-1-2, 1-1-0 GLIAC) and came despite the fact the Lakers once again rallied from conceding the opening goal. A late first-half penalty was equalized by a
Noah Vasilev strike, but the Panthers found the winner just three minutes later to hold onto the victory.
Eric Carvajal was unlucky in net for the Lakers as he once again had to face down a penalty in this match. An unfortunate bounce clipped
Khori Miles' hand and Carvajal read the penalty taker the entire way, but the ball just went over the diving junior goalkeeper. Â
The Lakers responded midway through the second half with a diligent play off a corner kick.
Nick Kilian played a short pass to
Luca Swinton, who swung the cross to the far post where
Noah Vasilev headed it onto
Gabriel Koenig in the middle for the goal. It was the second goal of the year for the senior defender, matching his career total entering the season.
It was a fairly even game statistically with Davenport edging out Roosevelt 11-10 in shot attempts, though the Lakers put just one on target. The Lakers did win four corner kicks to just one for the Panthers, and Carvajal finished with five saves on the game.
UP NEXT: The Lakers stay on the road Friday with their longest trip of the season, a trek to St. Cloud State in Minnesota for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
