ST. LOUIS, Mo. – An ill-timed scoring drought doomed Roosevelt in a 76-62 loss at Maryville on Saturday in the GLIAC-GLVC Crossover hosted by the Saints in St. Louis.
The Lakers (0-2) trailed by as many as 10 in the first quarter before
Lexie Sinclair beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to seven at the end of 10 minutes. The lead fluctuated in the second quarter between four and seven points until the very end when the Saints hit two late free throws to take a nine-point edge into the locker room.
Roosevelt was able to cut its deficit down to three by the midway point of the third quarter before surrendering a 12-3 run over the next three minutes. Yet the Lakers had more punches to pull to score the final eight points of the quarter over a nearly three-minute span to make it a tight game entering the final 10 minutes.
For the first time in the game, the Lakers took the lead less than two minutes into the fourth quarter as freshman
Ava Brandenburg knocked down a triple to give Roosevelt a one-point edge. Brandenburg made a layup with 6:17 left to tie the game at 56, but that started an 11-0 Maryville run that didn't end until Brandenburg made a free throw with 2:40 left in regulation.
Brandenburg scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as one of three players to finish in double figures for the Lakers.
Marie Outlay scored 12 points with most of her offense coming at the free throw line and
Kencia Levasseur led the team with 15 points on an efficient 7 of 12 from the field. Levasseur also tied with
Talya Tillman for the team high in rebounds with eight as Roosevelt held a 46-44 advantage on the glass.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt travels to Quincy, Ill. next week to face off with Quincy and McKendree in the Quincy Classic. The Lakers will face the hosts on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning the next day to play the Bearcats at 1 p.m.
