Turchin's Triple Ices Lakers' First D-II Win

QUINCY, Ill. – Jayla Turchin's 3-pointer with one minute left was the final nail in the coffin as Roosevelt held on for a 65-64 win over Quincy on Friday evening at the Quincy Classic in Quincy, Ill.

The senior scored a game-best 21 points with eight of those coming in the fourth quarter of the hotly-contested game. The lead changed hands 15 times and the teams were tied on 11 occasions with the biggest lead for either side being the Lakers' seven-point edge at intermission.

Roosevelt (1-2) was able to take that lead because of the second quarter, which turned the game around in the Lakers' favor. The Lakers scored nine points off Quincy's six turnovers in the second quarter and shot 9 of 17 from the field to overturn a slim deficit after the first quarter. They also converted both of their offensive rebounds into points and sank both 3-point attempts.

The third quarter was a slog for the Lakers, but freshman Ava Brandenburg revived the team's spirits with seven points in the frame. Those points came on a personal 7-1 run for the Connecticut native that helped the Lakers reclaim a six-point lead after the Hawks rallied to tie the game. Brandenburg finished with 11 points, the third of four Lakers in double figures.

Marie Outlay had 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting, including making three of her five attempts from behind the arc. The sophomore dropped eight points in the opening quarter and 13 in the first half behind a cool 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Turchin also scored 13 in the first half while no other Roosevelt player had more than four points in the first half. Luka Malinka added seven second-half points to finish with 10 in the game.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt stays in Quincy for the second half of the Quincy Classic by facing off with McKendree at 1 p.m. in southern Illinois.
