QUINCY, Ill. – Roosevelt couldn't overcome a slow start in a 79-52 setback against McKendree on Saturday afternoon at the Quincy Classic in Quincy, Ill.
The Lakers (1-3) made just one shot in the first quarter – an
Ava Brandenburg jumper less than four minutes into the game. Yet the deficit was just four when the freshman made her shot before it spiraled with the Bearcats going on an 18-0 run over nearly six minutes. Roosevelt's deficit didn't fall below 17 over the final 30 minutes despite it being a more even contest.
The Lakers were much improved on the defensive end in the second half while limiting McKendree to 27.8 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes. However, Roosevelt's offense was still stagnated with just two players finishing with more than four points in the contest.
Luka Malinka, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored 25 points and
Marie Outlay chipped in nine.
Jayla Turchin led the Lakers with seven rebounds but was held without a point for the first time in her Roosevelt career.
Kencia Levasseur had four points and five boards while
Jalyssa Carrasco assisted on three buckets and added six rebounds.
UP NEXT: The Lakers travel to SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday evening for an exhibition game against the Division I Cougars at 6 p.m.
