ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Roosevelt opened its first NCAA campaign Friday afternoon with a 78-51 loss at Missouri St. Louis in the first of two games at the GLIAC-GLVC Crossover.
The Lakers (0-1) were led by sophomore
Marie Outlay, who had a career-best offensive day as the main source of Roosevelt's scoring. The Wisconsin native scored a career high 22 points and made 7 of 14 from the field and she also led the Lakers with seven boards in the game. No other Lakers player scored more than six points, which
Jayla Turchin paired with six rebounds on what was otherwise a tough day for the Lakers' offense.
Turchin got things started for Roosevelt with a jumper to take a 2-0 lead then
Talya Tillman collected an offensive rebound and scored her first collegiate points to make it 4-2. That was the last lead the Lakers would hold as the deficit grew to as many as 13 before Turchin beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter. Outlay hit a jumper with 6:25 left in the half to cut the Tritons' lead to four, but that was as close as Roosevelt would manage.
Coach
Deon Thomas was able to get 15 of his 16 players into the game with
Luka Malinka missing out due to injury. A total of nine different players scored, but only
Makiah Hawk and
Kencia Levasseur were able to join Outlay and Turchin in making more than one field goal.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will stay in St. Louis on Saturday to take on Maryville at 2 p.m. to close out the annual competition between the regional conferences.
