CHICAGO – Five players finished in double figures Friday night as Roosevelt picked up its first win of the season with a 98-68 triumph over East-West at the Goodman Center.
The Phantoms came out of the gate and knocked down consecutive 3-pointers on their opening possessions to take a 6-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. However, the Lakers (1-3) scored the next 13 points and never looked back. Roosevelt took a 14-point lead into the intermission and the advantage to as much as 33 in the second half before settling at 30 at the final buzzer.
Roosevelt's initial surge was sparked by
Aedan Campos and
Enari Thomas, both of whom scored six points in that 13-0 spurt. Campos hit two 3-pointers while Thomas added three layups in that three-minute stretch. Both also ended the night with at least 20 points as Campos made 6 of 10 from long range en route to a career-best 20 points and Thomas was 8 of 13 from the field and 4 of 5 at the foul line to finish with 21.
The Lakers were dominant on the interior offensively with Campos able to stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting. Roosevelt held a 42-22 edge in points in the paint and turned 13 offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.
Griffin Yaklich scored 14 points and led the team with eight rebounds on an efficient 7 of 11 from the floor and
Khalil Haywood added 12 points as well.
Forte Prater rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points and nine assists.
It was overall a very strong night for Roosevelt offensively as the Lakers shot 53.6 percent from the field in the victory, including a season-best 43 percent from behind the arc. Roosevelt also clamped down on defense in the second half, holding East-West to just 32 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes, including 3 of 11 from 3-point range.
UP NEXT: The Lakers hit the road next week for a pair of contests, starting with a trip to Ohio Dominican on Monday with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
