Strong Rebounding Not Enough For Lakers In Home Opener

CHICAGO – Roosevelt made history with three players finishing in double figures for rebounds, but it was not enough as the Lakers fell 79-61 to Governors State on Thursday night at the Goodman Center.

There were plenty of opportunities for the Lakers to grab rebounds early as neither team was able to find much success at the start. In the first eight minutes, the teams combined to make just 7 of 33 from the field, which fueled Roosevelt's dominant effort on the glass. The Lakers (0-3) finished with a 55-42 edge in rebounding, including securing 22 offensive rebounds.

Kennedy Brown and Ramean Hinton both scored double-doubles in the game as they each added 10 points to their exhaustive rebound total. Hinton led the way with 14 rebounds and Brown had 11 boards while Griffin Yaklich was sandwiched between the two with 12 rebounds but he fell two points shy of also recording a double-double.
It is the first time in program history three players had at least 10 rebounds and the first time since Dec. 14, 2019 that two players finished with double figures on the glass.

Forte Prater led the Lakers in scoring with 20 points, heating up in the second half when it was a bit too late for Roosevelt. The Lakers made just seven shots in the first half and scored only 16 points while Governors State built a 27-point halftime advantage. The Jaguars went on an 18-4 run to drive the lead into double digits then ended the half on a 17-2 run.

The deficit peaked at 30 points in the second half, but the Lakers scored 17 of the final 22 points, including the last seven to end the game on a high note.

PREGAME FESTIVITIES: Prior to tipoff Thursday, Roosevelt held its ring ceremony to honor the 2023-24 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship teams. The coaching staff and most of the roster received their conference championship rings. In addition to current players, Daniel Reed, Forte Prater, Aedan Campos and Katrell Weekley, five former players returned to the Goodman Center. Kani Acree, Maurice Commander, Cody Mitchell, David Swedura and Malcolm Townsel were in attendance to collect their rings before the game.

UP NEXT: The Lakers are back in action next Friday, Nov. 22, when they host East-West at the Goodman Center for a 7 p.m. tipoff in downtown Chicago.
