Late Swinton Strike Lifts Lakers To GLIAC Bye

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Luca Swinton's 88th minute free kick kept Roosevelt's hopes of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title alive Friday afternoon at Morris Field.

The junior's shot from 23 yards out snuck past the wall and inside the left post to give the Lakers a late 1-0 win over Davenport, breaking the tie with the Panthers for second in the GLIAC and securing the Lakers a bye in the conference tournament. It also sets up a winner-take-all showdown Sunday at home against No. 9 Saginaw Valley State, which currently sits three points above Roosevelt (9-4-2, 7-4-0 GLIAC) in the conference standings.

Both teams were pressing for a tiebreaker in the second half as the action ping ponged across the field. Davenport held a 7-5 overall edge in shots on target despite both teams attempting 15 shots in the match. The difference was a foul against Oskar Schuster just outside the penalty box that led to Swinton's chance. Both Swinton and Nick Kilian stood over the ball, but it was the junior who put his foot through it and out of the reach of the diving keeper.

Roosevelt junior goalkeeper Eric Carvajal made seven saves, four of which came in the second half, to preserve his fifth shutout of the season. All four of those second-half saves came in the final 20 minutes as well as he pushed away shots in the 74th, 78th and 79th minutes then added the game-sealing save just 20 seconds after the Lakers took the lead.

Davide Comai led the Lakers with two shots on target and both Schuster and Caco Fernandez added shots on goal as well.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt will have a chance to surprise the entire conference Sunday afternoon when it hosts No. 9 Saginaw Valley State at noon at Morris Field. If the Lakers defeat the Cardinals, they would secure the top overall seed in the GLIAC Tournament and earn the right to host the semifinals and final at Morris Field on Nov. 15 and 17. Any other result would leave Roosevelt in second place, which still earns the Lakers a bye into the semifinals at Saginaw Valley State on Nov. 15.
