DETROIT – Roosevelt's rally in the first set came up a tad short in a straight-sets loss Friday evening in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Wayne State in Detroit.
The Lakers (1-12, 0-5 GLIAC) staved off four set points in the opening set before succumbing in a 27-25 nailbiter. However, the Warriors were able to hold steady to take the final two sets 25-16 and 25-15 to send keep Roosevelt winless in GLIAC play this season.
Viktoria Marysheva led the group with nine kills followed by
Yuliia Shchepkina with eight to go along with her three blocks.
Zoe Hutchinson ran the offense with 30 assists and
Cydney Martinez had 10 digs to pace the Lakers.
It was a tough start for the Lakers as Wayne State rolled off four straight points to begin the match before
Emily DeBlecourt put Roosevelt on the board with a kill. The Lakers brought the deficit down to two points on a handful of occasions, but trailed 23-17 before the momentum began to shift.
Krista Norton smashed down a kill and the Warriors committed two straight errors, the second of which was a block for Marysheva and Shchepkina.
After Shchepkina warded off the first set point with a kill, DeBlecourt came up with an ace to put the pressure on the Warriors. Wayne State committed another attack error before DeBlecourt served up her second ace of the match to tie the set at 24. After a Warriors timeout, the teams traded points before Wayne State finished the set.
Roosevelt let the second set slip away from it a tad in the middle when a 13-10 deficit ballooned into 20-12 before the Lakers regrouped with a timeout. The Lakers lost the first six points in the third set and couldn't get closer than four points for the rest of the set.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt's road trip continues Saturday with a visit to No. 16 Grand Valley State for a 2 p.m. first serve in Allendale, Mich.
