ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt fell 3-1 to Parkside on Sunday afternoon at Morris Field in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
The Lakers (0-8-4, 0-7-2) were quick out of the gate and dominated the first 15 minutes of the match. Roosevelt spent much of that time in Parkside's half of the field and that pressure eventually led to the Lakers scoring in the ninth minute. However, the Rangers were able to equalize shortly before halftime then added two goals in three minutes early in the second half for the win.
Roosevelt's goal began with Parkside taking a short goal kick and the Lakers immediately pressuring the ball. The clearance attempt was intercepted by Lainey Canaan, who headed it up to
Aaliyah Leanos to pass to
Paola Macias. The senior midfielder attempted to cross the ball into the box, but it missed everyone and was eventually corralled by
Cami Butler. The freshman quickly played the ball back into a dangerous area for Leanos to run into the space and one-time the ball under a diving goalkeeper.
There were a few more chances for the Lakers before the game began to turn swiftly in Parkside's favor. The Rangers ended up with 62 percent of the possession in the match, and for the most part, the Lakers were able to keep their opponents at bay.
Roxy Herrera made three saves in the first half, but eventually, Parkside found enough space to sneak a shot past her in the 38
th minute.
Parkside scored a quick second goal in the 57
th minute then added a third in the 60
th when Herrera was screened and could not see the shot from the top of the box off a ricochet. Herrera still finished with six saves in the match although the Lakers were outshot 21-3 after taking the first four shots of the match. The Rangers also had 10 first-half corner kicks and finished with a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.
UP NEXT: Roosevelt heads out on its longest road trip of the season Friday when it travels to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a matchup at Northern Michigan at 2 p.m. The Wildcats bested the Lakers 6-0 earlier this season at Morris Field.
