Herrera Stonewalls Grand Valley State Despite Defeat

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A standout performance in goal for Roxy Herrera was not enough as Roosevelt fell 2-0 to No. 24 Grand Valley State on Friday in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The visiting Lakers (0-7-4, 0-6-2 GLIAC) were overwhelmed on the stat sheet, but they were in with a fighting chance still thanks to some strong play on the back line. Grand Valley State outshot Roosevelt 33-1 in the match, but just 14 of those attempts actually made it to Herrera in goal. The junior stopped 12 shots herself and the defense in front of her blocked 12 attempts.

Grand Valley State scored twice in a roughly three-minute span with goals in the 26th and 29th minutes. Herrera made eight saves in the first half then added four more in the second while the visiting Lakers' only shot was a Brenna Rohloff drive that was blocked in the 61st minute. The host Lakers also had 22 corner kicks in the match, and Roosevelt was able to protect itself against all of them.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt returns home Sunday afternoon for a noon kickoff against Parkside at Morris Field. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie on Oct. 4 in Kenosha, Wis. during the first meeting of the season.
