Lakers Overwhelm Rangers With Scoring Outburst

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Oskar Schuster's second two-goal effort on the season lifted Roosevelt to a dominant 4-1 win over Parkside on Friday in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Morris Field.

The Lakers (5-2-2, 3-2-0 GLIAC) were in control for much of the game, squashing any chances the Rangers tried to create while extending the Parkside defense. Roosevelt held an 18-4 edge in attempted shots on goal and a 9-3 advantage in shots on target by denying Parkside the room to shoot the ball on some dangerous long passes over the defense.

Schuster opened the scoring just shy of the 20-minute mark off a gorgeous long pass from senior Gabriel Koenig. The ball from just shy of the midway line landed perfectly into Schuster's pass and the forward made no mistake in sending the right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net. In the 88th minute, he completed his sixth brace in a Lakers uniform by dribbling down the left wing then cutting into the box, dribbling past the keeper and slotting home the Lakers' fourth goal.

Roosevelt struck for a second goal in the 38th minute off an unworldly touch from Erik Hernandez off a seemingly broken play. Parkside had a throw-in and the ball bounced around and deflected off Haris Sarajlila into Hernandez's feet. The sophomore was able to control the ball with his left thigh to set up a right-footed volley that sailed over an outstretched Rangers goalkeeper into the upper left corner of the net.

The Lakers didn't even let off the gas in the second half, either, taking a 3-0 lead a little more than three minutes after halftime. A sustained amount of pressure in the Rangers end of the field eventually led to Nick Kilian sending in a shot-pass toward the area. The Parkside goalie tried to deflect it out of danger, but the ball rolled to Sebastian Rodriguez who poked it into the empty net.

Parkside claimed a goal back in the 67th minute, but it was not enough to unseat an organized Lakers squad.

UP NEXT: Roosevelt finishes off its brief homestand with a noon matchup against Purdue Northwest at Morris Field on Sunday.
