ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Roosevelt fell Sunday 3-2 to a clinical Purdue Northwest side in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup dominated by the Lakers at Morris Field.
The Lakers (5-3-2, 3-3-0 GLIAC) held much of the statistical advantage in possession and shots, but they were never able to fully recover from the opening 15 minutes. The Pride scored a little more than six minutes into the game and quickly doubled their lead six minutes later. Roosevelt continued to possess the ball and press up the field, but it was unable to find a response until late in the half.
Davide Comai made sure the Lakers entered halftime with some momentum when he slammed a volley into the lower right corner of the net in the 40
th minute.
Valdemar Nambo's cross was held up by the strong gusts in Arlington Heights, falling just out of the reach of Omar Youssaf. However, the ball bounced perfectly to Comai, who cut the deficit in half with his strike.
Roosevelt came out searching for an equalizer in the second half and nearly found it on a couple of occasions. However, the Pride hit back on a counterattack to restore a two-goal lead with a little less than 24 minutes left. The goal only intensified the Lakers' efforts as 11 of their 16 shot attempts came in the second half, most of which came when trailing 3-1.
Khori Miles gave the Lakers a glimmer of hope with a little less than 10 minutes left when he pounced on a dropped cross and willed it into the net. Roosevelt had several chances to tie the match in the closing seconds, none closer than when the clock struck a minute left and Miles had his shot pushed away into the path of
Oskar Schuster. The junior forward was able to get his strength behind the shot, but the Purdue Northwest keeper scrambled back to preserve the victory for his team.
UP NEXT: The Lakers will get a quick chance at revenge on Friday when they travel to Purdue Northwest for a 3 p.m. kickoff in Hammond, Ind.
