22nd Ranked Football Defeats Trinity International 31-8 for MSFA Midwest League Victory

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The 22nd ranked Roosevelt University football team cruised to a 31-8 victory over Trinity International in a Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League game on Saturday, March 27 at Morris Field.

The Lakers built a 14-0 lead during the first quarter, scoring first on a 72-yard pass play from Jack Sheehan (SR/St. Petersburg, Fla.) to Christian Phillips (FR/Waukegan, Ill.) with Phillips doing all the work and breaking away from the Trojan defenders on his run after the catch. Sheehan then threw his second touchdown of the game later in the quarter, connecting with Blaize Cobb-Griffin (JR/Sidell, Ill.) on an eight-yard scoring pass.

The Trojans were able to answer back with a touchdown of their own with a two-point conversion in the third quarter to cut the RU lead to 14-8. However, the Lakers came right back with a touchdown on their next possession when Ke'von Johnson (JR/Joliet, Ill.) broke through for a 54-yard scoring run on fourth down and two to extend the lead to 21-8.

Early in the fourth quarter, Sheehan connected once again with Phillips for a score, this time on a 28-yard touchdown toss to push the lead to 28-8. Later in the final quarter, Collin Schmutzler (FR/Lockport, Ill.) intercepted a Trojan pass at the RU 25-yard line to stop TIU and give the ball back to the Lakers. Roosevelt proceeded to drive down to the Trinity International 11-yard line, where Omar Beltran (SR/Los Angeles, Calif.) connected on a 29-yard field goal for the 31-8 final score.
