CRESTWOOD, Ill. – Despite seven-plus strong innings from starter Jake Meyer, the Roosevelt baseball team could not rally back after Robert Morris scored two runs with two outs in the first inning in a narrow 2-1 loss to the rival Eagles at Ozinga Field on Tuesday.
Zach Taylor drove in Parker Coleman on a sixth-inning single for the only run of the day for Roosevelt (4-20, 4-9 CCAC).
Robert Morris (16-12, 8-6 CCAC) featured strong pitching of its own with Brandon Hickey, Jimmy Christian and Tyler Kirkwood combining to scatter six hits and allow just one run.
After RMU DH David Dugger drew a one-out walk and subsequently stole second in the opening inning, Chris Broccolino hit a ball into center to drive in the game's first run.
A single pushed Broccolino to second and a wild pitch by Meyer put a pair in scoring position. The Meyer uncorked a second wild pitch that allowed Broccolino to score before the RU rookie induced an inning-ending groundout.
From there Meyer was able to limit the Eagles to just two hits after the first, rebounding well from a wild start to pitch into the eighth before giving way to reliever Anthony Nicholas.
Nicholas continued the trend and tossed 1.2 innings of one-hit shutout baseball to keep the Lakers in the game.
The Lakers put the leadoff man on after Jake Hutchinson hit a single, but a double-play ball eliminated that RU on-base threat and Kirkwood struck out pinch hitter Leo Lunatto for the game's final out.
